Sexism: Wage Differentials

Throughout society, a gender earnings gap still remains which can largely explained by the differences of male and female rank and area of work. Looking at salary earnings in Canadian Universities, it is shown that male salaries have been gradually declining across groups where as female salaries have remained stable. Warman, Woolley, and Worswick conclude that starting salaries are vital for getting rid of earning differentials. It's been stated that age is now becoming a major factor reflecting the differences in wages between males and females; we can see this to be true by looking at minimum wage in Canada--persons under the age of 18 recieve $9.75, but persons over the age of 18 recieve $10.25. However, in spite of this, it has been revealed that the male and female salary structures are more similar then they once were. Gardin, del Rio, and Canto discuss how the implementation of a minimum wage closes the wage gap significantly, but does less for adults. Furthermore, Miller observes that, on average, womens rate of pay is $0.30 less than the male rate. Miller also mentions that the gender wage gap has declined by several percentage points which may push the notion that levels of discrimination is also declining. However, it is clear a gener wage gap still exists. Even though Canada and all of its provinces have enacted equal pay/non-discrimination guidelines, statistics show that women are still receiving lower wages per job than men. This holds true in Canada, the US, and the EU.
